Problem Definition
A lot of schools are accustomed to learning that is textbook based as was the standard with the educational model before technology had become the norm.
In Zimbabwe, a lot of government institutions do not make use of technology in their day to day lessons spanning across subjects which are not technical.
This however, poses a challenge where for most of the times students are learning outdated syllabi ( the timeframe is dependent on how far the subject Develops)

Current Learning Process

Class Commences
Class begins with a song and dance lesson aimed at enabling the classroom tension to ease up to increase learner participation and retention.

Maths Lesson Begins
The maths lesson begins with the teacher explaining basic calculus concepts such as addition & subtraction. The teacher makes use of the blackboard counters to have an interactive lesson on how to add items and subtract items.

In-Class Begins
After learning a certain concept, students get to put their knowledge to the test by doing an in-class exercise which contains all levels of difficulty to objectively assess how well students grasped the concepts done on the day in question.
Current Process Shortfalls
The current education system has a few flaws that prevent it from being as impactful to a larger demographic.

A lack of alignment between the modern subject innovations and the schools learning curriculums

The current model does not incorporate students with various learning disabilities

Learning is not as fun as would be valuable for young toddlers in their developmental phase

How Might We...
Improve Learner experience in a way that communicates directly to the learner to have better knowledge retention?
Revision of School Curricula At Intervals
Schools can revise their curriculums annually with updated information from the global context. This would enable them to evaluate the learning outcomes of students and align the new content with the learning needs of students.
Implementing Technology Into Curricula
Technology curriculums can be digitized and placed into schools, modelled in a way that targets learner needs, and provides a solution for them within the confines of different learner abilities. The most feasible way of implementation would be to use available technology which includes smartphones.
Teachers Structure Their Own Curriculums
Teachers are given the freedom to design the lessons and activities that will provide a comprehensive and engaging learning experience for their students and incorporate technology, arts, and include other resources at their own discretion. This will be tailored to the specific students that a teacher would have.
Why The
Selected Solution?
Given the education system in Zimbabwe ECD schools, it might be challenging to have curriculum reviews and changes separate from the entire Ministry as it would be unsustainable.
With the proposed solution, there would be made use of existing technologies which make use of cellphones to teach in a fun & interactive way.
Pros
- Easy to review & update curriculum as it is within realm of control
- Implementation is controllable as it makes use of mobile phone technology
- Easy progress tracking & monitoring even when not in the same physical location
Cons
- Hardware limitations of mobile devices to run software
- Internet Connectivity might be a potential risk area
